Mae Young Classic episode 5, was the first episode to feature the second round matches. After an exciting ride through the first round, things started to get more serious.
The matches were longer, the competition more fierce as the talent upped their game with the intention of making the quarter finals.
Being the second round I had a good understanding of the wrestlers involved. Kairi Sane, Serena Deeb and Bianca Belair were all stand out women from the first round for me. Looking at the pairings in the matches for the episode I found it difficult to pick clear winners.
Episode 5 – The Card
- Rachel Evers vs Abbey Laith
- Serena Deeb vs Piper Niven
- Princesa Sugehit vs Mercedes Martinez
- Kairi Sane vs Bianca Belair
Rachel Evers vs Abbey Laith
This was a match between strength and speed. Rachel and Abbey were well matched and produced a good contest.
I was impressed by Rachel Evers in the first round and she impressed me again here. I hope the WWE sign her to a development deal as I believe she has some great potential for the future.
Abbey Laith got another fluke win against the tide of offence from Rachel Evers. Again using the Alligator Clutch. Despite being the veteran she appears to be adept at playing the underdog and did so again during this match.
Serena Deeb vs Piper Niven
Piper Niven was coming off a great match with Santana Garrett. Serena also had a good match in her publisied return journey back to the WWE.
This was an interesting pairing, Piper was as expected the dominant of the two in this one. Serena was booked as the underdog as she struggled to overcome Piper in the early parts of the match. The crowd got behind Deeb as she gradually wore her stronger competition down.
I was sure Serena would prevail and make it through to the quarter finals. As her return to the WWE had been heavily promoted during the tournament. However, Piper surprised again and got the win. She is certainly another one to watch for the future.
Princesa Sugehit vs Mercedes Martinez
The two veterans collide. I think there were 60 years total between them and you could see the class in their performance.
Princesa got in a lot of offence and Mercedes sold well for her. This was something I hadn’t been expecting. Despite the short time they had for this one, they told a great story in the ring which built to a satisfactory finish.
I had no doubt Mercedes was going through here and was surprised she had to properly fight to get there.
Kairi Sane vs Bianca Belair
Kairi Sane returned to headline another episode. The pattern had shown that this final match of the episode was going to be good. The fact Kairi Sane was in it made this even more likely.
It was actually Bianca Belair who was the star here. For someone who has only had a year in wrestling, she was as a monster. Credit where credit’s due, Sane played her part in putting Bianca Beliar over. But she really brought everything for this match.
For a long part of the match Bianca beat Kairi down and dominated her. The hair whip spot is a cool gimmick that really garnered good heat from the crowd. Like I said before, she has a long future in the WWE.
Kairi Sane won the match with the amazing diving elbow. But Bianca Belair really made a statement.
This was a really episode all round. Gone were the mismatches and the awkward matches. These are the elite of this tournament already. Both the youth and the veterans really stepped up and put on a real show. Round two quickly off to a great start.
